What is a Moon sign?

Your Moon sign is the zodiac sign the Moon was passing through at the moment you were born. The Moon is the fastest-moving body astrologers use: it crosses a whole sign in about two and a half days and travels around the entire zodiac in a little over 27 days. That is why two people born in the same week can have very different Moon signs, even though their Sun sign is the same.

In a birth chart the Moon sits alongside the Sun and the rising sign as one of the “Big Three”. Where the Sun describes the identity you grow into, the Moon is read as your inner weather: what you need to feel safe, how you react before you have time to think, and what comforts you when life is hard.

What your Moon sign describes

Astrologers associate the Moon with emotional needs, habits, memory, home, and the way we care for others and want to be cared for. A Moon in a fire sign (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius) is often described as quick and expressive; in an earth sign (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn) as steady and practical; in an air sign (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius) as talkative and reflective; and in a water sign (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces) as deep and intuitive.

The sign’s modality adds another layer. Cardinal Moons (Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn) tend to act on their feelings, fixed Moons (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius) to hold on to them, and mutable Moons (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces) to adapt. None of this is a verdict on who you are. Many people find their Moon sign a useful mirror for patterns they already sense, and a good starting point for asking what they really need.

Why your birth time matters

Because the Moon moves about half a degree every hour, the time of birth can matter. On most days the Moon stays in one sign from midnight to midnight, and your Moon sign is clear even without a birth time. But roughly every two and a half days it crosses into the next sign, and if you were born on one of those days, the answer depends on the hour.

If you don’t know your birth time, tick “I don’t know my birth time”. The calculator then checks your whole birthday, from 00:00 to 23:59 local time. If the Moon stayed in one sign, you get a definite result. If it changed sign, you see the local time it moved and both possible signs, so you can read both descriptions or look for your birth record. When you do enter a time but the Moon was within one degree of a sign boundary, the result also shows the nearest sign change and how far it was from your birth time.

How ReYep calculates your Moon sign

First, your local birth time is converted to Universal Time with the full history of the IANA time zone database for your birth place, including every summer-time rule in force on that date. Turkey’s clock changes in the 1970s and 1980s and its move to permanent UTC+3 in 2016 are included, and so are the hours that were skipped or repeated when clocks changed, which the calculator points out if your time falls in one.

The Moon’s position is then calculated with the open-source Astronomy Engine library: a geocentric, apparent position in the tropical zodiac, on the true ecliptic and equinox of your birth date. These are the conventions most astrology software uses. We tested the results against Swiss Ephemeris at 1,000 random moments between 1920 and 2060, and the largest difference for the Moon was 0.007°, far smaller than a sign. Every step, from the UTC time to the ecliptic longitude, is shown under “Calculation details”. All of it happens in your browser: your birth details are not sent to us or stored.

Frequently asked questions

What is my Moon sign if I don’t know my birth time?

Enter your birth date and place and tick “I don’t know my birth time”. On most days the Moon stays in one sign all day and you get a definite answer. If it changed sign on your birthday, the calculator shows both signs and the local time of the change.

How is the Moon sign different from the Sun sign?

Your Sun sign depends on the date and changes about once a month; your Moon sign changes every two to three days. Astrologers read the Sun as your core identity and the Moon as your emotional needs and instinctive reactions.

Why does another website give me a different Moon sign?

Usually because of the birth time or the time zone: if the Moon changed sign on your birthday, a one-hour summer-time mistake can change the result. Some sites also use sidereal (Vedic) astrology, where the signs are shifted by about 24°; ReYep uses the tropical zodiac of Western astrology.

Does my place of birth matter for the Moon sign?

Only through the time zone: the same clock time is a different moment in Istanbul and in New York. At any given moment the Moon is in the same sign for everyone on Earth. The place’s coordinates matter for the rising sign, not for the Moon sign.

How accurate is this Moon sign calculator?

With a correct birth time the Moon’s position is accurate to a small fraction of a degree: in our tests against Swiss Ephemeris the largest difference was 0.007°. The usual source of error is the birth time itself, which is why the calculator warns you when the Moon was close to a sign boundary.

Is my birth data stored or shared?

No. The calculation runs in your browser. To find your town, the place search downloads a small list of places for the first letters you type, and then the time zone history of the place you choose. Your birth date and time never leave your device, and nothing is stored.
