What the Waning Gibbous means
The light starts to shrink and the Moon rises later each night. After the Full Moon peak, this phase favours sharing and digesting: teach what you learned, say thank you, and make sense of what the last two weeks showed you before rushing into anything new.
The Moon in Taurus
The Moon in Taurus slows everything down to a comfortable pace. Good food, touch, music and familiar routines feel especially satisfying. Money and practical matters go well when you take your time, while rushing or forcing change meets quiet resistance.

What the Moon’s phase measures
The Moon has no light of its own. Half of it is always lit by the Sun, and the phase we see depends on the angle between Sun, Earth and Moon. When the Moon passes between us and the Sun, its lit side faces away and we get a New Moon. Two weeks later Earth sits between the two and we see the whole lit face: the Full Moon.
The illumination percentage on this page is the share of the visible disc that is lit. It grows from 0% at New Moon to 100% at Full Moon and back again. One full cycle, from one New Moon to the next, takes about 29.5 days, although each month can run several hours longer or shorter because the Moon’s orbit is not a perfect circle.
The eight phases
Astronomers mark four exact moments in each cycle: New Moon, First Quarter, Full Moon and Last Quarter. Each happens at one instant, so we name the whole calendar day it falls on after it, as almanacs do. The days in between are crescents (less than half lit) or gibbous phases (more than half lit), and they are waxing while the light grows and waning while it shrinks.
In astrology the cycle works like a breathing rhythm: the waxing half favours starting, building and pushing outward, while the waning half favours reviewing, finishing and letting go. The Moon’s age, the number of days since the last New Moon, tells you where you are in that rhythm.
Why the Moon’s zodiac sign matters
The Moon is the fastest-moving body in the sky. It crosses a whole sign in about two and a half days and travels around the zodiac in under a month. Astrologers read the sign it is passing through as the emotional weather everyone shares: a Moon in Taurus feels slow and comfortable, a Moon in Gemini restless and talkative.
The Moon’s sign on the day you were born is part of your own birth chart. If you want to know yours, try our Moon sign calculator, or the rising sign calculator for your Big Three.
How we calculate it
Every value on this page comes from an astronomical model of the Sun and Moon (the open-source Astronomy Engine library), not from a fixed table copied from elsewhere. Positions are geocentric and use the tropical zodiac, like the rest of ReYep. Phase times are checked against the US Naval Observatory and agree within a minute or two.
The page loads with times in a default time zone for its language. In your browser it switches to your own time zone automatically, and you can pick any date or another place to see the Moon there.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Moon full tonight?
The Full Moon is a single moment, shown above with its date and time in your time zone. The Moon looks full to the eye for about a day before and after it, when more than 98% of the disc is lit.
How long does each Moon phase last?
New Moon, First Quarter, Full Moon and Last Quarter are exact instants, roughly 7.4 days apart. The crescent and gibbous phases fill the days in between, so each lasts about six days.
Why do websites list different dates for the Full Moon?
The moment of the Full Moon is the same everywhere, but the calendar date depends on your time zone. A Full Moon at 02:00 in Istanbul is still the previous evening in New York. This page shows the time in your own time zone.
What sign is the Moon in today, and how long will it stay there?
The Moon’s sign and degree are shown at the top of the page. The Moon spends about two and a half days in each sign; a low degree means it has just arrived, a degree near 30 means it will soon move on.
What does the Moon’s age mean?
It is the number of days since the last New Moon. An age near 0 is a New Moon, about 7.4 is First Quarter, about 14.8 is Full Moon and about 22 is Last Quarter.
Does the Moon phase look different in the southern hemisphere?
The phase and the percentage lit are the same everywhere on Earth at the same moment. Seen from the southern hemisphere the picture is flipped, so a waxing Moon is lit on the left instead of the right.
