What is a Venus sign?

Your Venus sign is the zodiac sign Venus was in at the moment you were born. Seen from Earth, Venus never strays more than about 47° from the Sun, so your Venus sign is always your Sun sign or one of the two signs on either side of it. If you are a Gemini, for example, your Venus can only be in Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer or Leo.

Venus usually spends three to five weeks in a sign. About every 19 months it turns retrograde for around six weeks, appearing to move backwards against the stars, and around those times it can stay in one sign for up to four months. That is why people born months apart can share a Venus sign, while friends born in the same month may not.

What your Venus sign describes

Astrologers link Venus with love, attraction and pleasure, but also with what you value and find beautiful: the way you flirt and show affection, what makes you feel appreciated, your taste in art, style and surroundings, and how you seek harmony with others. It is one of the first placements astrologers look at when they talk about relationships.

The element of your Venus sign gives a first impression. A fire Venus (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius) is often described as spontaneous and passionate; earth Venus (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn) as loyal and sensual; air Venus (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius) as social and drawn to good conversation; and water Venus (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces) as tender and emotionally deep. In traditional astrology Venus rules two signs, Taurus and Libra, and is exalted in Pisces; in these signs its themes are often described as especially easy to express. Treat all of these descriptions as questions rather than labels: what do you recognise in yourself, and what would you add?

Birth time, cusps and retrograde Venus

Venus moves a little over a degree a day at most, so on almost every date your Venus sign is the same whatever time you were born. You can tick “I don’t know my birth time” and still get a definite answer. On the dozen or so days a year when Venus changes sign, the calculator checks your whole birthday and shows the local time of the change and both possible signs.

When you enter a time and Venus changed sign within a day of your birth, the result says so, with the date and time of the change. It also tells you if Venus was retrograde when you were born. Astrologers often read a retrograde Venus as a more reflective, inward way of loving and valuing, one that takes time to trust its own taste. It is a nuance, not a problem, and about 7% of people are born with it.

How ReYep calculates your Venus sign

Your local birth time is converted to Universal Time with the full IANA time zone history of your birth place, including every summer-time rule in force on that date and the historical changes many countries, Turkey among them, made over the decades. If your birth time falls in an hour that was skipped or repeated when clocks changed, the calculator asks which moment you mean.

Venus’s position comes from the open-source Astronomy Engine library: its apparent geocentric position, corrected for the time light takes to reach us and for aberration, in the tropical zodiac on the true ecliptic and equinox of your birth date. Retrograde motion is read from the change in longitude over the 24 hours around your birth. In our tests against Swiss Ephemeris at 1,000 random moments between 1920 and 2060, the largest difference for Venus was 0.005°, and the direction of motion matched every time Venus was clearly moving. Every step is shown under “Calculation details”, and nothing leaves your browser.

Frequently asked questions

What does my Venus sign mean?

In astrology Venus describes how you love and what you value: how you show affection, what attracts you, what makes you feel appreciated and what you find beautiful. Your Venus sign colours those themes with the qualities of its sign.

Do I need my birth time to find my Venus sign?

Usually not. Venus changes sign roughly once a month, so on almost every date the answer is the same all day. If Venus did change sign on your birthday, the calculator shows both possible signs and the time of the change.

Why is my Venus sign close to my Sun sign?

Because Venus orbits closer to the Sun than Earth does, it never appears more than about 47° from the Sun. Your Venus sign is therefore always your Sun sign or within two signs of it.

What does it mean if my Venus was retrograde?

Venus was appearing to move backwards in the sky when you were born, which happens for about six weeks every 19 months. Astrologers often read it as a more reflective, inward approach to love and values. It is a nuance, not a bad sign.

Venus sign or Moon sign: which matters more in love?

They describe different things. Venus is how you love and attract; the Moon is what you need to feel emotionally safe. Many astrologers look at both, together with Mars, when they talk about relationships.

Is my birth data stored?

No. Everything is calculated in your browser. The place search only downloads a list of places for the first letters you type; your birth date and time never leave your device, and nothing is stored.
